Before You Arrive

Preparations begin well before you set foot on solid ground in Japan. One of the first documents to acquire is your passport. If you don’t have one yet, apply as soon as possible. If you plan to stay in Japan for more than one semester, you might also need a student visa.

Deciding what to bring also takes careful planning. Learn more about Japan’s climate, electrical currents, and custom of gift-giving so you have a good idea of what to bring. This section includes a printable packing checklist and several packing tips.

Be in good health before departing for Japan. It is recommended that you visit your doctor and your dentist for a check-up, and to pack a small medical kit that includes all your medicines and health-related supplies. Find out more helpful tips under Health Planning.
